APEX NEWCOMERS & FRIENDS CLUB
FEBRUARY 2012
Apex Newcomers & Friends Club (ANFC) is a not-for-profit social organization. ANFC promotes interest in local, civic, cultural and service programs. General Meetings are the second Wednesday of each month (September through May) at the C. C. Jones Building, 309 Holleman Street, Apex at 9:30 a.m.
Prospective members
are welcome to try two visits to any function before joining. The annual non-refundable dues are $25.00
per year plus a donation of $2.00 each meeting to help defray the cost of
hospitality and building use.
Our first meeting of the New Year was very interesting and entertaining. We found out that you may be asked to do a job that you know nothing about and it can become quite rewarding. Debbie Moose found out that cooking, not her forte’, has led her to another level and wrote several cook books. Now let us turn our unknown skills, selling raffle tickets, into a prosperous reward. Our prosperous reward will be shared by our charities. You opened your hearts with food for the children at Apex Elementary School; along with other community associations, they have enough for the rest of the school year. Again, you are to be commended. My skill in getting our food stores to agree to use of their lobby is getting to be quite a challenge. Getting thru to their headquarters is very frustrating.
Looks like February will be “for the birds”!! Mr. John Connors from the Audubon Society will talk about birds and people. It could prove to be very interesting. Bette has done a wonderful job on obtaining some different subjects. Glad she has that job.
I guess my best skill is asking people to do things, and it is getting done. Thank you so much for your support.
Eleanor says, “Don’t forget your valentine, whoever it may be”.
As ever,
Eleanor
President
MEMBERSHIP NOTICE – Mary D. (919) 909-9744 and Aurelia C. (919) 372-1984
Informational pamphlets and fliers are a great way to introduce our club to prospective members and the community in general. They are available each meeting on the sign-in table. Please take as many as needed.
ATTENTION!!! Clarification on the $2.00 monthly fee: bringing in food for hospitality OR bringing items for Western Wake Crisis Ministry does not eliminate the need to pay the $2.00 fee

February’s program will feature John Connors, Coordinator
of the Naturalist Center at NC Museum of Natural Sciences and National
Audubon Society Board Member.
His topic will be: Chimney Swifts and People: Past, Present and Future
In 1682 a swift was found
nesting for the first time in a chimney at a colonist’s cabin in Maine. This
event forever changed the relationship between this species and people. From
the journals of early explorers through the efforts of the largest
all-volunteer research project to study the migration path of a single species
of bird, to Jesuit missionaries in a far off land, it’s a remarkable story.
And it’s not over.
It’s a story whose next chapter will be written by us.
